Members of Tamil Nadu Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (TNAWHU) staged a demonstration here on Friday urging the State Government to improve social security benefits to them as well as the efficiency of the anganwadis in the district.

TNAWHU district president V. Sundarammal said that the basic salary of the anganwadi staff had not been raised despite an order in that regard was issued by the Central Government. “Tamil Nadu is the only State where the basic salaries are yet to be raised from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000,” she added.

Rented premises

The workers alleged that many of the anganwadi centres in the district were still functioning from the rented premises. They also pointed out that financial allocation to include vegetables in the meals given to children was inadequate.

“At present, just 25 paise is allocated for purchasing vegetables for a child a day,” the workers said.
