CHENNAI: DMK president M. Karunanidhi composed a poem on Cuba and its leader Fidel Castro and read it out at the valedictory of the Cuban Solidarity Conference here.
Mr. Karunanidhi said this morning he went through a book written by D. Pandian, State secretary of the Communist Party of India, and thought of writing a speech based on ideas gathered from the book. "A little later I thought: `why not a poem?' I write poems on various topics in Murasoli [the DMK party newspaper] and, hence, I decided I will write on this subject," he said.
The poem traces the early days of Mr. Castro, his taking up causes of people, his incarceration, the revolution, his fight against the United States and the support that it received from all right thinking people of the world.
In the poem, Mr. Karunanidhi described Mr. Castro as a "revolutionary spark" and that the Cuban leader's achievements "mingled with my breath and my life."
Prison doors had to release the lion in a mere two years, though he was sentenced to 15; and he "had the association of a Tiger - Che Guevera."
Describing the country of many islands as resembling "a honeycomb," he justified the comparison. Because: "Whenever America touches it in an unguarded moment, the people of Cuba, like honey bees, will sting."
