Collector Anshul Mishra dedicated a first-of-its kind neonatal ambulance of the ‘108’ Emergency Management Services at the Collectorate here on Thursday.

The Collector stepped into the vehicle and checked facilities available. There are 24 specially trained personnel — NEMT (neonatal emergency medical technicians) for these ambulances. The patients would be provided pre-hospital care en route before being admitted to definitive care in hospital.

The neonatal ambulance would cover entire Madurai district. It has transport incubator, ventilator, pulse-oxy meter, suction apparatus, trans-illuminator, surfactants, and fresh frozen plasma to handle emergencies. A centralised emergency response centre in Chennai would receive the calls through ‘108,’ a toll-free telephone number available on landline and mobile phones round-the-clock across the State.

According to ‘108’ Emergency Service General Manager (operations) S.G.S. Lakshmanan, the vehicle will be exclusively used for neonatal cases. Prior to Madurai, such a facility was available for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram districts.

The nurses handling the babies had undergone extensive training from Institute of Child Health, Chennai. “Tirunelveli district will get this facility in a few months.”

Manager Thanigaivel Murugan was present. A joint initiative from UNICEF, Department of Paediatrics, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, National Rural Health Mission, ‘108’ emergency service management and GVK EMRI, the service is aimed at preventing the infant mortality rate (IMR).
