On the occasion of B.R. Ambedkar’s 56th death anniversary, representatives of various political parties paid homage to the leader by garlanding his statue on Alagarkoil Road here on Thursday.

Cadres of Puthiya Tamilagam led by its Nilakkottai MLA Ramasamy garlanded the statue. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi cadres took out a rally from Tamukkam Ground to the statue. M. Ellalan, rural secretary; Kani Amudhan, State deputy secretary, R. Pandiammal, urban secretary, and Thennilavan, youth front, participated in the rally and garlanded the statue.

They demanded that panchami lands belonging to Dalits at Kottampatti near Melur, allegedly taken over by private parties, should be retrieved.

DMK cadres led by its youth front leader M. Jayaram garlanded Dr.Ambedkar’s statue. MDMK’s district secretary Pudur Bhoominathan; Vadivel, district deputy secretary of Congress; Surendran of Bharatiya Janatha Party; John Moses, State president, Janata Dal (Secular); All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam’s Gurusamy; and Dr.Ambedkar Advocates’ Association of Madurai District Court paid floral tributes to Ambedkar.
