Residents should pay deposit for UGD connection

Municipality initiates preliminary works for the scheme Civic body likely to provide daily water supply

NAMAKKAL: The Namakkal Municipality will provide new water connections to all the applicants.

Municipal Commissioner S. Kalaiselvan said that the State Government had allowed the municipalities, which were providing above 50 litres per capita per day (lpcd), to provide any number of connections without any upper limit.

This had come as a relief to the residents in the town who were demanding the municipality for long to provide new connections. Earlier, the local body received permission from the Government to provide only 3,000 new connections. But the issue of new connections was delayed inordinately for several reasons. "As per the new instructions from the Government, we will start providing connections to all the applicants. We will start receiving applications after getting the Government Order in this regard," the Commissioner said. At present, the municipality is supplying 83 lpcd. It has a total of 8,000 existing connections.

The Commissioner said that residents applying for new connections should pay the deposit for Under Ground Drainage connection in addition to the amount for water connection. "The UGD project is being executed at a cost of Rs. 18.84 crore. The municipality's contribution to the project is Rs. 7 crore. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, implementing agency of the project, has already started the work," the Commissioner said.

The Municipality had also initiated preliminary works for a new water supply scheme at an estimated cost of around Rs. 10 crore. "The TWAD board has prepared a proposal. After the implementation of the new scheme, the municipality will be able to ensure daily water supply and provide 90 lpcd," Mr. Kalaiselvan said.
