Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Cumbum town secretary R.P. Easwaran (48), regarded as a loyalist of M.K. Alagiri, committed suicide by hanging from a tree on the premises of his house in Cumbum of Theni district on Sunday morning.

In a police complaint, his son-in-law, R. Arivazhagan (30), alleged that Easwaran took the extreme decision as he could not reconcile himself to reports that Mr. Alagiri had been sidelined in the party. However, the police said that Easwaran, a widower, had serious health problems.

Easwaran was found hanging from a guava tree near his house on Vivekanandar Street. He was looked after by his two married daughters, who live in the neighbourhood.

The party’s Theni district secretary, M. Mookaiah, Madurai urban district ad-hoc committee member G. Thalapathi, former Deputy Mayor Misa Pandian, party leader in Madurai Corporation M.L. Raj and the suspended members P.M. Mannan and Mubarak Mandiri were among those who paid their last respects.
