Tirupur: Members of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) observed a fast in front of the Railway Station here on Tuesday in protest against the move to disinvest the government share in profit-making public sector undertakings, among other issues.

The agitators said continuation of PSUs under the government control was essential as they were among the few institutions that offered quota for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Another issue raised was the demand for trade union rights in multi-national companies that set up their units in the country. The AITUC men also expressed their displeasure on the economic policies of the Central Government that led to rise in prices of essential commodities over the last few months.

Former Member of Parliament K. Subbarayan led the agitation.

Similar protests were held in Dharapuram, Avinashi, Uthukuli, Udumalpet and Palladam.
