Issue to be raised when Assembly meets again

TAMBARAM: If the land acquisition scheme for the proposed airport expansion project is executed, the State Government should invite people, who live near the Chennai airport and fear displacement, and hold discussions with them, said Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA S.K. Mahendran.

His party leader in the Assembly, C. Govindasamy, had already raised the issue in the inaugural session after the new Government took over, but got no reply, Mr. Mahendran said while addressing a public meeting Pozhichalur on Sunday evening.

He said the issue would be raised when the Assembly meets. Mr. Mahendran pledged his party's whole-hearted support for the cause.

The State government should convene a meeting to consider the views of agitating residents. Officials from all government departments and Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu should participate in the meeting, Mr. Mahendran said.

Even if the Governments decide to go ahead with the Chennai airport's expansion and modernisation programme, it should be done without affecting the people.

Original plan

This could be achieved if the Governments stick to the original expansion plan of the airport along the northern direction, Mr. Mahendran said, adding there was very little habitation in that area.

Earlier in the day, several hundred residents of Pozhichalur, Anakaputhur and Gowl Bazaar took part in a procession through their localities.
