The protest by employees of the Airports Authority Employees Union (AAEU) continued at Chennai airport on Wednesday and plans are afoot to intensify it, employees said.
There was high drama at the airport on Tuesday, when representatives from companies planning to bid for the privatization process arrived for a visit.
Over 500 airport employees barged into the terminal and prevented the bidders from entering. None of them were able to see the terminals, and went back disappointed.
“We will continue to protest till our demand is fulfilled. Next week, we will strengthen our protest by organising candlelight demonstration and a human chain,” said an AAEU member.
Airport officials said they would work on contingency plans in case the employees decided to go on mass leave.
“We have not decided as yet. But if there is a mass leave situation, we will work on making alternative arrangements sometime next week,” said an official.
Several employees of the airport have been wearing black ribbons and staging black flag demonstrations for over a month now after the government announced the invitation of bids for the privatisation of Chennai airport.
