A dedicated digital archival system will start functioning in the Chennai Kendra of All India Radio from next month.

Announcing this at the platinum jubilee celebrations of AIR Chennai on Tuesday, Jawahar Sircar, chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati, mentioned a recent report in The Hindu highlighting the need to take up digitisation of rare recording.

The article had highlighted the need for the government to allocate funds to preserve over 25,000 such recordings.

It would be the first such digital system to be established outside Delhi, Mr. Sircar said.

All efforts would be made to preserve different forms of Indian arts and culture, he said on Tuesday.

AIR Chennai is a treasure trove with the over 25,000 recordings running to over 13,000 hours.
