Under the Union Government's Janani Suraksha Yojana

TIRUNELVELI: The Nanguneri MLA, H. Vasanthakumar, distributed cheques for Rs. 700 each to 30 pregnant women, being given by the Union Government under the `Janani Suraksha Yojana' to meet their medical expenses at the time of delivery, at a function held at Munanjipatti, about 40 km from here, on Sunday.

As the Government has allocated Rs. 1.40 lakh for the villages being covered by Munanjipatti Primary Health Centre, the health officials of this PHC have identified 200 beneficiaries from below poverty line families in the villages under their jurisdiction to give the financial assistance. So far, 128 women have received the assistance.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vasanthakumar said he would accord highest priority for upgrading the PHCs in Nanguneri constituency, as the villagers from this area had to go all the way to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for advanced medical assistance.

"I'll take all out efforts to get maximum assistance from the State and Central Governments to upgrade the PHCs in Nanguneri Assembly segment," he assured.

The Medical Officer, Munanjipatti PHC, P. Kalyani, the sanitary inspector, Munanjipatti PHC, M. Mathuram Brighton, the district president of Traders' Wing of Congress, N.K.V. Sivakumar, and others participated.
