MADURAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has expressed its apprehension that free and fair election was not possible in Madurai Parliamentary constituency in the present set up of the police.

In a petition given to the Election Observer here on Sunday, the party urban district secretary, K. Raju listed out incidents like money distribution and assaulting cadres of opposition parties by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam men.

“No action has been taken by the police … instead of registering cases against culprits (who distributed Rs. 500 to each voter) they (the police) are foisting cases against the AIADMK and its alliance party workers,” the memorandum said.

Mr. Raju said that anti-social elements with weapons were roaming around Bibikulam and Netaji road. He listed out two incidents in which the cadres of opposition parties were attacked.

Naming a few ruling party cadres who were threatening and preventing opposition party cadres from doing election work, he said the Tallakulam police were not taking any effective steps to control illegal activities.

Mr. Raju sought suitable instruction to the Tallakulam police. The Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran, was present.
