CHENNAI: AIADMK MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly on Tuesday after the Speaker refused them permission to raise the issue of protection for their leader Jayalalithaa.

The members raised the issue immediately after the question hour. They raised slogans in the House, criticising the State government for not providing adequate security to Ms. Jayalalithaa and demanded the resignation of the government.

Later addressing mediapersons, AIADMK deputy leader O. Panneerselvam alleged that a planned attempt was made on the life of Jayalalithaa during her visit to Pasumpon in Theni district recently. She was not provided adequate security by the police during her visit to Rasipuram, too. Members of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Communist Party of India also walked out, demanding India’s intervention in Sri Lanka.CPI MLA V. Sivapunniam said they staged a walkout as the Speaker did not allow the House to discuss the Sri Lanka issue. MDMK MLA Cumbum N. Ramakrishnan said their protest was to condemn the Centre for ‘supplying’ arms to the island nation.
