Continue to file complaints with police, seek adequate security

CHENNAI: AIADMK members continued to lodge complaints with the city police, saying they feared trouble on polling day by ruling party cadres.

The AIADMK lawyers' wing led by V P Kalairajan presented a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police Letika Saran here on Monday. Speaking to reporters later, he said party cadres had been arrested in midnight raids and cases registered under non-bailable sections, which included robbery and burglary charges. He claimed that police had detained as 150 partymen in South Chennai area; another 400 had been removed from the city including women.

Mr Kalairajan charged policemen with visiting his MLA office and enquiring about his whereabouts. When an elected representative faced such threats, there could be no security for the common man, he said. He demanded the police act without any partiality.

The party has filed advance bail applications for over 200 cadres and functionaries in the courts fearing arrest under false charges by the police, he said in reply to another question.

Earlier in the day, a group of candidates contesting from the 98th ward including AIADMK candidate Samson and independents approached the Commissioner and filed a complaint. According to them, they had specific information that the ruling party candidate had clandestinely planned to resort to booth capturing. The authorities should provide adequate bandobast and videograph events on polling day, they pleaded.
