Government urged to check prices of building materials

CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Monday took part in the protest demonstrations held by a non-party union of construction workers, demanding, among other things, steps to control the price of building materials, enhancement of pension and extension of the ESI facility. The Tamizhaga Kattada Thozhilalargal Podhunala Mathiya Munnetra Sangam held the demonstrations in nine districts.

"Sky-rocketing" prices

Inaugurating the demonstration near the Chepauk Guest House, AIADMK chairman E. Madhusoodhanan accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government of not taking any step to control "sky-rocketing" prices of cement, sand, bricks and steel. Construction work had come to a standstill in many places, rendering thousands of workers jobless. Construction workers, including women, carrying sandbags and bricks, took part in the protests.
