To register their protest over Amarnath shrine land issue
Coimbatore: The City Police were on their toes when the Hindu fronts staged two agitations in the city on Thursday to register their protest over the Amarnath shrine land issue.
Hindu Makkal Katchi activists were intercepted by the police when they attempted to picket the airport for an aircraft roko agitation in the morning.
Activists numbering more than ten were picked up by the police when the picketing attempt was made.
In the evening, as part of the nationwide bandh call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, almost all the Hindu outfits led by the Bharathia Janata Party attempted to stage a rail roko agitation.
Commotion prevailed when the activists tried to sneak through the police cordon to reach the platforms.
The police on duty at the spot overpowered the activists and arrested more than 150 of them.
The agitators were led by S.R. Seghar of the BJP and R. Ramanathan of the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh.
