Some protest opposite the mill by setting up vegetable stall
Frustrated with the lack of response from the government and being paid no wages for the past several months, the workers of the Anglo-French Textile Mills have decided to stage a protest of a different kind.
On Thursday morning, a group of around 40-50 workers gathered opposite the mill and set up stalls to sell vegetables. Dressed in their light and dark blue uniforms, these workers gathered around to sell tomatoes, onions, mangoes and other vegetables to the general public.
According to Joint Secretary of the AFT Workers Association Nagarathinam, the government has forced several AFT employees to go from being skilled workers to unskilled labour. Five of the workers had gotten together and pooled Rs. 1000 to set up the vegetable stall. Until the mill was opened, this protest would continue.
Although these workers were doing this as a form of protest, there were several others who were forced to take up work as auto drivers, construction site workers and watchmen in order to make ends meet.
