Nallipalayam Police arrested State general secretary of the Adi Tamizhar Peravai (ATP) Nagarajan of Manamadurai on Friday for his alleged involvement in the government bus burning case on Tiruchengode Road on September 24. He is the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the case.

About 800 ATP cadre staged a demonstration in front of the Namakkal collectorate on that day seeking CBCID inquiry into the death of V. Gayathri (19), a second year B. Tech IT student, who was found hanging in the hostel of a private college in Tiruchengode where she was studying, on September 2.

The protestors were removed and taken to a marriage hall as they were denied permission to stage the demonstration by the police. The same day a few protestors who managed to escape from police torched the faulty bus from Kumbakonam to Edapadi that was parked by the side of the Tiruchengode Road near the Nallipalayam Police Station when it was undergoing repair works.

He was booked under Section 120 (b) of the Indian Penal Code for conspiracy. Two more persons in connection with the bus burning case are yet to be arrested, Inspector Muthamizh Selvan said.

Nagarajan was produced before Namakkal Judicial Magistrate-1 Jothi on Friday night and sent to remand in the Salem Central Prison.
