MADURAI: For the first time, an officer in the rank of an Additional Director General of Police has been designated as the Commissioner of Police, Madurai City.

A. Subramanian, IPS, Inspector General of Police/Commissioner of Police, was on Wednesday promoted and retained in the same post.

The Madurai Commissionerate will now come under the direct supervision of the Director General of Police, police sources said.

Upgraded as a Commissionerate in 1990, G. Selvaraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, was Madurai's first Police Commissioner. Though a few officers in the rank of IGP were later posted as Commissioners, the retention of Mr. Subramanian has raised many eyebrows.

"This is not the first time that Commissionerates outside Chennai are getting ADGP rank officers. For a brief period, ADGP, S. Kumaraswamy, was the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore. There is a proposal to upgrade the four zones and post ADGPs there," a senior police official said.

A day after taking charge as IGP (Prisons), R. Sekar, was promoted and posted as ADGP (Prisons). Mahboob Alam, IGP, Central Reserve Police Force, New Delhi, has been promoted ADGP without prejudice to his deputation with the Centre.
