She unsuccessfully contested for president of actors' association
CUDDALORE: J. Devi, an actress from Chennai, filed her nominations as Independent for Vriddhachalam on Thursday. She is said to have unsuccessfully contested against actor Vijayakant for president of the South India Actors' Association in 2005.
Ms. Devi is said to have acted in "Naane Raja, Naane Mandhiri," "Mannukkul Vairam," "Aththai Madi Meththiyadi" and "Neethana Andha Kuyil."
Ms. Devi is also a stage actress and a resident of Alwar Thirunagar in Chennai.
Durai Ramachandran, acting in cameo rolls, has filed his nominations at Vriddhachalam. In the affidavit, he has given his address as Chinna Rajapillai Thottam at Kodambakkam.
However, he says his native place is Sethiathope in Cuddalore district. Acting in some films would not qualify Mr. Vijayakant to assume the political mantle.
In the case of M.G. Ramachandran, it was different: he had served in the DMK many years before launching the AIADMK, he said.
Though Mr. Vijayakant is said to have brought about unity among the actors and organised mega star events, none of the actors has extended him support in the political battle.
Three more candidates with the same name A. Vijayakant, K. Vijayakant and S.C. Vijayakant hailing from Suthukulum near Cuddalore, Thiruvannamalai and Veiyalur near Chidambaram too have filed nominations.
Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam sources said the move was probably the handiwork of political rivals intended to confuse the electorate.
On the concluding day of filing of nominations on Thursday, 19 candidates, including four substitutes, are in the fray.
