VELLORE: A total of 1,264 volunteers of Leftist parties and trade unions including the Communist Party of India (Marxists), Communist Party of India, Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) comprising 794 men and 470 women were arrested when they attempted to picket the government offices in 12 different centres in Vellore on Friday.

They protested against the hike in prices of the petroleum products and the general price hike of essential commodities.

A total of 157 persons including G. Latha, Gudiyatham CPI (M) MLA were arrested when they attempted to picket the Head Post Office in Vellore.

Two hundred and seventy-three persons were arrested in Walajapet, 210 in Ranipet, 185 in Gudiyatham, 147 in Tirupattur, 67 in Katpadi, 62 in Sholinghur, 60 in Ambur, 34 in Melpadi, 32 in front of Arcot taluk office, 16 in front of Arcot bus stand and 21 in Vaniyambadi. The arrested persons were later released.
