63rd Santosh Trophy National Football Championship under way; entry free for all matches
TIRUCHI: It will be an action packed week for the football buffs of the Rock Fort City. The cluster matches in the 63rd Santosh Trophy National Football Championship were kicked off at the St. Joseph’s College ground here on Sunday.
“Some very good sides, including Goa, are competing. Watching the players perform will be an inspiring experience for the aspirants,” said the Tiruchi District Football Association (TDFA) secretary P. Ukramakali. Jammu and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh played out a 1-1 draw in the opening match while Mizoram defeated Puducherry 4-0 in the other encounter.
Acknowledging the key role played by TDFA vice-president R. Nachimuthu, Director of Physical Education, St. Joseph’s College, M. Kasi and S. Pandian of St. Joseph’s College Higher Secondary School in preparing the ground for the national championship, Mr. Ukramakali said that the matches would be a treat to the local fans.
TDFA has been the proud host of the prestigious Federation Cup Championship, Mathuram Trophy and Rockfort Trophy, national-level inter-club football tournaments, Youth Nationals, and South Zone under-21 football tournament in the past.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by Collector T. Soundiah in the presence of General Managar MSO, BSNL, H. Mohamed Abubacker, and St. Joseph’s College Principal Rev. R. Rajarathinam.
Entry is free for all the matches.
