Man killed at a construction site was former councillor of Ambattur municipality

CHENNAI: The man who was killed when iron railings hoisted by a crane fell at the construction site of an elevated corridor near Ambattur industrial estate on Monday has been identified as G.Srinivasan (72), a former councillor of Ambattur municipality

According to police, Srinivasan was elected as a ward member of the local body in 1996. He was a resident of Ramapuram in Ambattur.

The number of injured in the incident has increased to 11 persons, including two cyclists, who are undergoing treatment at private hospitals in Anna Nagar and Ambattur. The injured persons, who were residents of Avadi and Ambattur, were said to be out of danger.

Two of them were discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

The accident occurred when the iron railings used for the construction of an elevated corridor of the Maduravoyal-Madhavaram Chennai bypass project fell. The National Highways Authority of India, the project implementing agency, has instituted an enquiry into the incident, police said.

Ambattur residents said no major construction work was carried out on Tuesday at the site near Ambattur Telephone Exchange except for some welding works.
