Tiruvannamalai: The Cent Percent Ration Card Verification Drive taken up last month in the district helped identifying about 45,000 ration cards which may be bogus, Food Minister E.V. Velu on Tuesday said.
Speaking at a consultative meeting with local body representatives from Vandavasi, Thellaru and Peranamallur blocks convened at Vandavasi, the Minister said that a list of ration cards which were found to be bogus was being prepared shop wise and would be pasted in the ration shops concerned soon. If genuine cardholders found their cards included in the list they could appeal against the decision within one month, Mr. Velu said.
Real poor people should be included
“As much as 35 kg of rice is being supplied to Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) families under Anthyodaya Anna Yojana every month. But several rich people are benefitting under this scheme. Village panchayat presidents should avoid nepotism while including families in the BPL list and they should be kind enough to include real poor people. To correct mistakes in the list, panchayat presidents should prepare a new list fairly and submit it before the end of December” Mr. Velu added.
He requested panchayat presidents to act as a bridge between government and people and urged the panchayat clerks to act swiftly with the permission of panchayat presidents regarding complaints in basic needs like drinking water, street lights etc.
Collector M. Rajendran, Cheyyar Revenue Divisional Officer Murugan, Regional Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies Subramanian, Panchayat Union chairmen K.R. Seethapathi (Thellaru), M.S. Dharanivendhan (Vandavasi) and vice-chairman K.T. Ramasami (Peranamallur) were among the participants.
