Tiruchi: The State-level Road Race tested the stamina and will power of the athletes, as they ran a distance of 12 km.

The event, which was organised by the Nelson Sports Association, was flagged off from Puliyur by former International high jumper, Nallusamy Annavi on Sunday.

C. Sivakumar of Tiruchi Rail Sports Club Athletic Academy secured the first place. P. Gopi of Tiruchi St. Joseph Athletic Academy and T. Raja of Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore bagged the second and third place respectively.

Says the secretary of the association, Veera. Tirupathy: "Generally, races of this kind are not conducted here and this a move to create awareness among the masses about the sport. It was certainly encouraging to see a large number of people on the roadside cheering the runners."

SP gives away prizes

At a function held later in the day, Superintendent of Police, Karur, K. Shankar gave away prizes to the winners. Regional Director of Physical Education, S. Sivasamy also spoke on the occasion.
