It was a refreshingly different experience for the inmates of the Special Prison for Women, Vellore when Udhavum Ullangal, the National Service Scheme (NSS) of Auxilium College and the women's wing of the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Residents' Welfare Association jointly organised various cultural programmes in the prison premises in connection with the International Women's Day on Tuesday.
The NSS volunteers of Auxilium College performed singing, dance and drama events for the benefit of the inmates. Amudha, NSS Programme Officer of the college screened two short films.
Anbu, an inmate praised the Superintendent of the Special Prison for Women R. Rajalakshmi for encouraging the inmates to pursue their studies and for hearing their grievances.
She said that the jokes cracked by the Humour Club of Udhavum Ullangal enabled them to forget their worries and feel happy.
The inmates too gave a cultural performance, which was enjoyed by the students and teachers of Auxilium College. The members of the women's wing of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar Residents' Welfare Association distributed biscuits to the inmates and their children.
R. Chandrasekaran, president, Udhavum Ullangal delivered a special address. Selvi, an inmate, proposed a vote of thanks.
