About 1,500 men, women and children take part in the event at Vandalur

TAMBARAM: Despite a mild chill in the air, hundreds of people took part in a road race at Vandalur on Saturday morning.

As many as 1,561 men, women and children took part in the race sponsored by the Seethakathi Trust and organised to mark the anniversary of Golden Eagle Sports Club, Chromepet.

There were four categories: above 20, below 20, below 16 and below 14 in both the men and women sections. The participants assembled at Crescent School, Vandalur and after flag off, they hit the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road.

While the men aged over 20 covered a distance of 12 km, it was less for boys, girls and women of different age groups. The winners were: Men above 20 - T. Chandrashekar; boys below 20 - Ezhil Nilavan; below 16 - R. Krishna; and below 14 - N. Jayachandran. In the women's categories, the winners: women above 20 - R. Panchali; girls below 20 - Lavanya; below 16 - V. Jayanthi; and below 14 - R. Hemalatha.

Even students new to athletics competed, though several of them walked the race. The participation from government and aided schools was encouraging.

Giving away the prizes, Walter Davaram, vice president, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu said the Authority would extend all possible help to promote athletics and support such events.

D.S. Sivasamy, president, Golden Eagle sports club, said the road race was conducted regularly to kindle interest in athletics and also to mark the club's 20th anniversary.
