MADURAI: Threadbare and soiled cloth, oiled hair and barefoot remain a permanent feature of V. Ayyanar, a 14-year-old boy from Siruvalai, near Samayanallur.

Hailing from a rural background, this young kid of Class IX of Government Higher Secondary School, Alanganallur, has made a mixer with a timer -- a miniature model with plastic jars and a shaving blade and it works in a jiffy when power is connected.

He has also innovated on the model by attaching a timer to the mixer through an electronic watch head. A battery-operated model of a generator and a model of boat using a piece of rubber used in the making of footwear are his other innovations.

Ayyanar has been trying his hand at making these scientific innovations for two years and has already made models of wind mill, grinder and is now working on a model of a missile.

Wants to meet Kalam

His ambition is to become a scientist and meet former President Abdul Kalam and show his creations. His father A. Vaigai and V. Parvathi Devi work as casual agricultural labourers.
