Selected to participate in the Commonwealth National Open Chess Competition in Chennai N.M. Sarfaraz, a 9th standard student of the Christus Rex Senior Secondary School here was not only felicitated but also rewarded with a handsome purse to take care of his expenses by the Nilgiris chapter of the Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Peravai.

At a function held here on Sunday a sum of Rs. 25,000 was handed over to Sarfaraz on behalf of the Peravai by the Secretary, Nilgiris district AIADMK and Board Member, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, K.R. Arjunan.

Presiding over the function, the Secretary of the Peravai, Bala Nandakumar said that Sarfaraz is a talented chess player who earlier this year had been placed seventh in the state in the Under-15 category.

Though elated to see his son being chosen to display his talent in the Commonwealth chess competition scheduled to start in Chennai on November 22, the boy’s father Noor Mohamed was finding it difficult to spare the money required to meet the expenses. Hence, the Peravai had stepped in.

Pointing out that it was in keeping with a directive of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to extend a helping hand to such sportspersons, Mr. Nandakumar expressed the confidence that Sarfaraz will continue to do the district proud.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Velan, handed over playing accessories to the boy.
