Coimbatore: It’s going to be fun all the way for both riders and drivers as they, slowly and safely, traverse a distance of 140 km in the 10th Chander Memorial Rally 2009 for two and four wheelers here on December 20. Organised by the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club, the rally, run on Time, Speed and Distance (TSD) format, is conducted in memory of M.K. Chander.

One of city’s best known rallyist, Chander was a patron involved in the sport in a big way. He began his career in 1985 as a rider and switched over to navigation a couple of years later. A representative of popular teams like TVS Suzuki, MRF and JK Tyres, Chander had also secured placing in more than 60 rallies. He was always one to compete fairly and assist other competitors in any way he could.

Chander was killed in a road accident in December a decade ago. So, the motor sport community of Coimbatore thought it fit to host an event in his memory. And, with his family chipping in a big way, the show had seen through nine successful years. This year’s event will cover a distance of approximately 140 km. The maximum average speed allowed will be 45 kmph and the minimum as low as 15kmph through crowded areas.

There will be secret check points on the route to monitor speeds. And, every second, be it late or early, is liable for penalty. This time around the organisers expect the turnout to be 70 and 80 in both two and four wheelers.

The event features three classes – open, novice and all ladies. All mandatory checks (pre-event scrutiny) and compulsory drivers’ briefing will be held at the Coimbatore Auto Sports Club at 6 p.m. on December 19.P. Nagarajan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) will flag off the event from the Andal Kalyana Mandapam at 9 a.m. on December 20. Entries are open till December 19 (Saturday).
