A total of 90 mentally retarded children were given specially-designed air beds to protect them from bedsore.

This facility is being introduced taking into consideration that mentally retarded children are unable to move around and remain bedridden, which makes them more prone to bedsore.

The parents should understand proper utilisation of the air beds, said Darez Ahamed, Collector, distributing the beds among the beneficiaries at a function held here on Wednesday.

A sum of Rs. 2.43 lakh has been spent for the beds.

He explained the educational facilities being provided to these children depending upon their learning capacity.

Practice on muscular movement and speech therapy is being given to them.

Arrangement has been made to bring these children from their home by autorickshaws.

Mr. Ahamed said that a total of 467 children underwent special education programme at the 10-day care centres functioning under Sarva Siksha Abiyan at Esanai, Ammapalaiyam, Chettikula, Kolakanatham, Veppur, Kunnam, Kizhperambalur, Thazhuthazhai, Kaikalathur, and Valikandapuram.
