As many as 80 bags of rice meant for Public Distribution System outlets in Tamil Nadu were seized from a mill at Anandapuram near Ariyur on Thursday.

Each bag containing 50 kg of double boiled rice was brought from Tamil Nadu to the mill by a dealer to polish it before being selling it in the open market. A case has been registered and investigation is on to arrest the persons involved, sources in the Civil Supplies Department said.

The stock of smuggled rice was noticed during a drive conducted to check whether rice mill owners were hoarding rice meant for PDS distribution here. The department launched the drive after the High Court ordered the mill owners to supply 50 per cent of their rice to government quota via the Food Corporation of India as per their earlier agreement.
