In Wednesday’s dusk-to-dawn combing operation carried out by the police, 61 persons were taken into custody in the city.

In the wake of skirmishes causing unrest, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan and Deputy Commissioner of Police T. Senthilkumar ordered the raids. In the operation, looking out for ex-convicts, rowdy sheeters, trouble mongers, miscreants and those evading execution of pending non-bailable warrants, as many as 61 persons had been taken into custody and a highest of 18 had come from Ramanathapuram police in Puliakulam area.

Police had deployed 96 pickets in sensitive pockets, 14 check-posts had been strengthened and re-activated, besides 19 check points coming up. More than 400 police men have been drafted in addition to deployment of personnel from Armed Reserve, Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion and Home Guards. Patrolling has been stepped up by deploying 22 jeeps, 33 motor cycles.
