Sixty-year-old Kuppusamy of Kuppidichatham village in Arcot taluk created a flutter at the Collectorate here on Wednesday when he set himself on fire. People threw sand on him and put out the flames. Collector P. Sankar was alerted and he came from a meeting and to hear Kuppusamy’s grievance.

Kuppusamy showed a letter which he had kept in his bag, in which he alleged that his son Raja engineered an attack on him with the help of Kuppidichatham panchayat president Munusamy and two others, Annamalai and Venkatesan. Raja had threatened him by taking away a sum of Rs.50,000 which he had earned through a chit scheme.

Kuppusamy had also written in the letter that he thought it was better to die than live with these problems.

The Collector got Kuppusamy admitted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai, with serious burns.
