The first phase of the much acclaimed Kalaignar Housing Scheme 2010-2016 to rid the State of huts and provide concrete roof above the heads of the poor was inaugurated at Poikaraipatti near here on Thursday by Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Minister A. Tamilarasi.
Sixty concrete houses have been completed till date out of which 11 beneficiaries received the keys of the new houses from the Minister in the presence of Collector C.Kamaraj and Sholavandan MLA P. Moorthy. Out of the 25,854 huts that were surveyed, 8,762 were found eligible and one among them was given work order by the Chief Minister and 10 were given orders by the Collector.
Moreover, works were under way in 178 panchayats to benefit 6,647 beneficiaries. For those who find it difficult to construct the houses, steps were being taken to ask the construction unions to provide labour to finish the work.
All works would be completed by January. The current position of the works under way is as follows:
Basement work had been completed for 4,900 houses; 2,646 houses had been raised up to lintel level and 1,056 up to the roof level; roof works had been completed for 628 houses and plastering works were going on in 132 houses. The officials said that target had been fixed to complete 1,500 houses before this month-end.
The government had also made arrangements by setting up a district-level committee consisting of officials from the Mines, Revenue and Public Works departments to ensure the smooth flow of manpower and materials to complete the housing scheme.
