This will benefit 50 per cent of the users
There are more than 1.13 crore LPG connections in State
For July and August, Rs.18 crore has been sanctioned for the subsidy
CHENNAI: The Rs.30 subsidy, announced by the State government, for liquefied petroleum gas cylinders will be available to 57.28 lakh households in the State with single-cylinder connections.
There are more than 1.13 crore LPG connections in the State, of which 57.28 lakh were single cylinder connections. Refuting reports that the subsidy would be available only for 20 per cent of the LPG users, an official release said this would benefit 50 per cent of the users.
The procedures for disbursing the subsidy, through the LPG distributors, were finalised after discussions between the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation and the national oil marketing companies, the release said.
For July and August, Rs.18 crore had been sanctioned for the subsidy. Measures had been initiated to make this payment, through the Corporation, to the distributors.
Yet to get money
Though the release said there was no delay in disbursing the amount, sources in the oil industry told The Hindu that most of the distributors were yet to start selling the LPG cylinders to those eligible at the subsidised rate, as they had not got the money.
The sources said that as per the recent government order laying out the procedures, the subsidy would be made available in the first phase only to the single cylinder user-households that have a ration card. The distributors are required to make a note of the ration card number and mention it every time they supply refills. As sought by Civil Supplies Department officials, the distributors have submitted details of the number of households having single and double connections to whom they supplied refills in May. In the subsequent phases, those without ration cards will also be covered.
The release said all efforts were being made to ensure the subsidy reached the beneficiaries.
