550 students take part in sports meet

As many 550 students from various education districts competed in the Tirunelveli Divisional Republic Day Sports Meet organised by St. La Salle Higher Secondary School here on Wednesday.

Brother John Paul, school Headmaster and general secretary, declared the meet open in the presence of Regional Inspectors of Physical Education T. Ganesan (Tuticorin), S. Ponammal (Tirunelveli) and R. Kannan (Madurai). Students under the age groups of under 14, 17 and 19 exhibited their sporting acumen in a variety of athletic events.

The inter-school competition witnessed a score of athletes competing in the events of 100 metres, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1, 500 m running, 4 x 100 metre relay, 4 x 400 metre relay, long jump, high jump and triple jump throughout the day. Besides, the participants testified their skills with their temperament in throw events, including javelin, shot put and discuss throw.  

At the valedictory function, N.P. Jegan, Correspondent, Pope Engineering College, Sawyerpuram, and M. Sakthivel, Associate General Manager, Human Resources, Sterlite, presented prizes to the winners. P. Vishnu Prasad, Chief Education Officer, Tuticorin, P. Shaju, District Sports Officer, S. Tamilselvi, District Education Officer, Tuticorin, Joint Secretaries of the programme, P. Jeyakumar, M. Sathish, I. Dharma and T. Alagudurai were present.
