500 women vie for honours at sports festival

Nearly 500 took part in the district-level rounds of the national women’s sports festival held at the district stadium here on Monday. Organised by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Perambalur, the tournament featured athletics, hockey, handball, volleyball, basketball, kho-kho, kabaddi, table tennis, and badminton events. Cash awards of Rs. 400 and Rs. 250 were presented to each of the first and second prize winners in all the individual and team events.

In athletics, Kowsalya (100 metre), A.Janaki (200 metre), R. Geetha (400 metre), S.Arivazhagi (800 metre), A.Sandhya (1,500 metre), K.Uma Maheswari (3,000 metre), S.R.Kavya (shotput), M.Kayalvizhi (javelin throw), A.Nirosha (discus throw), S.Sivasakthi (high jump), K.Keerthika (long jump), and Perambalur block (4x100 metre relay and 4x400 metre relay), emerged victorious.

The winners in team events were Alathur block (kho-kho), St. Dominic Girls Higher Secondary School (handball), Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College (kabaddi), SVM Higher Secondary School, Arumbavur, (badminton), Golden Gates Matriculation School (basketball), Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Engineering College (volleyball), Thanthai Hans Roever College (hockey), and Government Higher Secondary School, Melapuliyur, (table tennis). P. Madhusudhan Reddy, Sub-Collector, distributed the prizes. P. Simon Raj, district sports officer.
