One of them was a former volunteer of ‘Friends of Police’

CHENNAI: Five youths, including a former Friends of Police (FOP) volunteer, were arrested for their alleged involvement in chain snatching incidents in Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam over the last five months. Gold jewellery, a car and a motorcycle were seized from them.

Following an increase in the chain-snatching incidents across the city, including in Vadapalani police limits, additional police teams were formed to patrol the area.

On Friday, a yellow brigade team on duty apprehended a youth, identified as Ganesan (23) of Karappakam, who tried to flee after attempting to snatch a chain from a woman. He confessed to having been involved in several chain-snatchings in the Vadapalani police limits along with four others.

Following his confession, a police team headed by P. Manohar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vadapalani) lodged a man hunt for his accomplices Prem Kumar (25), Prakash (22), Karuna (23) and Karthik (22) and apprehended them on Sunday.

Police said Prem Kumar, a former FOP volunteer with the Maduravoyal police, had planned the crimes.

Timings of police patrolling

“He knew the timings when there won’t be police patrolling in the area as he had assisted in the patrols previously.

He had planned and committed crimes along with the four others since last November,” Mr.Manohar said.

The group even staged a car theft last month and subsequently Prakash, who was the driver of the car, lodged a police complaint stating that his employer’s car was stolen from a hotel in the St. Thomas Mount area where he had parked it.

The vehicle was found hidden in Poonamallee, Mr. Manohar added. A total of 24 sovereigns of jewellery was recovered from the five youths.
