The 52-day-long protest in the private tyre company at Gangaikondan near here has come to an end following talks mediated by Joint Commissioner of Labour Jayasingan here on Wednesday.

Demanding wage hike and better working conditions, the labourers of the tyre manufacturing unit started agitation recently and the administration subsequently terminated the services of 72 workers. The protest intensified immediately as the agitating workers demanded their re-instatement.

As the protest entered the 52nd day on Wednesday, Mr. Jayasingan, who had camped here, mediated the talks between the trade union leaders including CITU district secretary Karumalaiyan, who represented the agitating workers and the representatives of the tyre manufacturing unit. Since the company administration agreed to reinstate 49 workers and agreed to resolve all other issues through dialogue with the union leaders, the protest came to an end.
