: A total of 47.5 tonnes of rice meant for supply under the public distribution system (PDS) in Vellore district and which were being smuggled out of Tamil Nadu were seized during vehicle checks carried out by various officials, including District Supply Officer, Special Tahsildar, members of flying squads, taluk supply officers and Inspector and Food Cell Criminal Investigation Department, in November.

According to a release from the Collector, PDS rice was seized with the objective to prevent the smuggling of rice to neighbouring States under the Essential Commodities Act 1955. The seized rice was entrusted to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.

Rewards

Rewards would be given for informing the authorities about the smuggling of rice and other essential commodities.
