As much as 436 kilograms of rice meant for the public distribution system was seized by the Civil Supplies officials from 14 bundles concealed near the North Madhavi Road here on Thursday.

According to an official release, under the direction of District Collector Darez Ahmed, officials have been inspecting various premises to see whether any PDS items have been hidden or whether domestic LPG cylinders are used in eateries.

During these searches, the officials, including V. Meenakshisundaram, District Supply Officer, and M. Bharathivalavan, Perambalur Taluk Supply Officer, stumbled on 14 bundles of rice meant for public distribution.

As there was no claimant for the rice, it had been seized and kept in the godown of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. The collector said that if rice and other items like kerosene meant for the public distribution system and also LPG cylinders were to be found being misused, severe action would be initiated against such persons. The public could inform the District Supply Officer (94450-00270) if they came across any such instances. The name of the informant would be kept confidential and he would also be rewarded for the information if it was proved right.
