KARUR: Police surrounded a gambling den at Monjanur near here late on Tuesday night and picked up 40 persons on charges of indulging in gambling besides netting a large amount of cash at stake.
Following a tip-off, Karur Superintendent of Police R. Dhinakaran led a posse of police personnel including Aravakurichi Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Bhaskaran, Inspectors Mahesh, Sivaraman and Kummaraja and surrounded the place at Monjanur Kalipalayam where gambling was going on.
Taken aback. the players ran helter-skelter. However, the police managed to round up all of them.
Incidentally, the garden where the gambling was under way is said to be that of former DMK MLA Monjanur Ramasamy, who died about a year back. After a stint with the MDMK, Ramasamy returned to the DMK fold in his twilight. His son Karthik has reportedly leased out the garden to one S. Murugarasan (38) of Muttur, Tirupur district. Karthik is said to be absconding while the police have listed Murugarasan among the arrested. Murugarasan was said to be operating the gambling den for some time now.
While 40 persons were arrested on charges of indulging in gambling, the police team also recovered Rs. 2,16,870 in cash that was in stake besides seizing 11 cars, four two-wheelers and 34 mobile phones from those arrested. All the 40 arrested were produced before the Judicial Magistrate II, Karur, on Wednesday and the judged enlarged them all on bail. Thennilai police are investigating.
Police have warned that anyone found indulging in such illegal activities would be dealt with severely. The police action raised many eyebrows in Karur district as the owner of the garden where the gambling den was on operation was the scion of an influential DMK party leader and the whole episode is seen here as besmirching the image of Ramasamy.
