Thirty-six persons who were found smoking in the New Bus Stand, Old Bus Stand and other public places here were fined Rs.100 each following a raid carried out by a team of health and sanitary officials of the Public Health Department of the Vellore Corporation led by V. Govindan, Corporation Health Officer on Friday.
Dr. Govindan said that the action has been taken under the Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade, Commerce, Distribution and Supply of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act 2003. Sale of tobacco products is banned within a radius of 100 metres from schools. Salesmen dealing in tobacco products should neither sell them to youth below the age of 18 years, nor engage youngsters below 18 years to sell the products, as per the Act. Those who violate rules will be fined Rs.200, he said.
