Police arrested a total of 35 welfare workers who were staging a demonstration here on Monday to highlight their second anniversary of ousting from service. Led by district coordinator Ravichandran, the workers were organising a ‘begging protest’ near the State Bank of India branch on the old bypass road when the police asked them to clear the place after a peaceful demonstration that was allowed originally. But they never heeded and following some jostling between the protestors and the police, 35 workers, including 10 women, were rounded up and taken away. They were let off in the evening.
