: Panic struck the Government Higher Secondary School at Padanthal in Sattur on Thursday as 32 girl students fell sick after taking folic acid tablets given at the school. However, all the students, who were admitted to the Government hospital at Sattur, were discharged after medical care.

Out of the 292 girl students in the school, over 150 girls were given the tablets by the Headmistress, Mercy Chellammal in the forenoon. The tablets were supplied through the Primary Health Centre in Uppathur.

“The Government has instructed the health department to distribute this tablet to the girl children who have attained maturity. This is the first time the tablets were supplied to this school,” the Tahsildar, S. Michaelraj, said.

Initially, seven students started vomiting and complained of giddiness. The students were rushed to the GH. Later, several other students too complained of uneasiness and they were also taken to the GH.

“The doctors said that the students might have fallen sick because of allergy. After medical treatment they were discharged,” Mr. Michaelraj said.

Meanwhile, the school authorities declared holiday for the school after parents, on knowing about the incident, thronged the school. Many parents took their children to the GH out of fear.
