About 30,000 candidates appeared for the written test conducted by the Railway Recruitment Cell of Southern Railway for an estimated 4,000 Group D vacancies.

The two-hour test was held across 60 centres in Chennai. The question paper consisting of 150 multiple-choice (four) objective type questions aimed to assess general knowledge/awareness, mathematics and reasoning was printed in Hindi, English, Urdu, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada.
