As many as 30 fishermen from Rameswaram were arrested on Saturday for illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters north of Talaimannar. The Sri Lankan Navy also seized five trawlers used by them.

This is the second arrest in the last two days. On Friday, 26 Indian fishermen were held off Kovilam Point.

Sri Lankan Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said the 30 fishermen were handed over to the Talaimannar police. Later, they were taken to the Mannar Magistrate and remanded till April 18, according to Indian Consul-General in Jaffna V. Mahalingam.

With this arrest, the number of fishermen apprehended and detained in Sri Lanka rose to 75, including the 19 who were arrested on March 13.
