A total of 3,100 kg of rice meant for supply under the public distribution system was seized by a team of revenue officials led by K. Vijayan, Taluk Supply Officer, Tirupattur.

The rice, contained in 62 bags of 50 kg each, which were hidden amidst sand heaps, in dried cow dung holes, inside haystacks and in the midst of bushes in a farm land opposite the railway station in Somanaickanpatti in Tirupattur taluk were found in an operation which lasted from 10 p.m. on Wednesday to 2 a.m. on Thursday.

The team swung into action on the instructions of Shilpa Prabhakar, Sub-Collector, Tirupattur and Jayasheela, District Supply Officer, Vellore. The rice smugglers were absconding. — Special Correspondent
