The Tuticorin police have arrested three students of the Law College there on charges of robbing a temple in the district earlier this month.

According to the police, the students identified as Amsaraj (26), Abdul Rahman (22) and Alexander (22), who along with two others Kumar (26) and Rajadurai (28) attempted to break into Kailasanathar Temple in Morappanaadu in the district earlier this month.

Their bid was foiled and two of the accused – Kumar and Rajadurai – had been apprehended, but the others were on the run.

The students were arrested during the course of a night patrol on October 13, and during investigation the gang revealed that on the night of October 4 they had robbed Rs.7,000 in cash and silver ornaments from another temple in Naduvarkurichi.

The gang was allegedly trying to steal money and jewellery from the temple to raise funds for a plan to murder a person over a personal rivalry, police said.

All three students have been charge-sheeted in other cases, including harassment of women, and were originally enrolled in Coimbatore Law College, and had been transferred out because of their misconduct, police said.
